These include the cryptologic linguist career and the international affairs specialist program. Enlisted airmen with skills in Farsi, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Pashtu or Korean may be qualified for a cryptologic language analyst career with the U. Air Force through the U. Air Force Cryptologist Language Analyst program. Cryptologic language analysts use radio equipment to intercept signals that may provide military intelligence in a foreign language.

Air Force language specialists transcribe whatever they pick up from the intercepted transmission, then analyze the results to extract information.

Cryptologic linguists must be high school graduates or have earned a GED with 15 or more credits of college. They are not required to be fluent enough in the target language to interpret it orally, because all communications are transcribed before being translated. The program trains Air Force officers who have advanced foreign language skills and a deep understanding of cultures and regions of the world.

IAS officers coordinate operations with regional allies and represent the Air Force in multinational coalitions. Some IAS officers serve as regional affairs strategists with expertise on a particular region and high-level foreign language skills. Others serve as political-military affairs strategists to add international affairs expertise to their existing career. Airmen who already know a foreign language to at least a moderately fluent level may take a Defense Language Proficiency Test or participate in an Oral Proficiency Interview to get into the program.

Applicants should have a superior record with no referral reports, unfavorable information files, control rosters or other derogatory information.
